Pedal. Pump. Play.
Mountain Biking
More than twenty-five years ago, a few bold riders traded mining pans for pedals and turned Rossland’s rugged past into its wild new future. Those early mountain bikers blazed through old mining roads and forgotten rights-of-way, carving the foundation for what would become one of Canada’s premier riding destinations.
Today, Rossland’s trails are pure gold — thanks to the passion and grit of the Kootenay Columbia Trail Society (KCTS) and a community that lives for two wheels and dirt under their tires. With over 200 km of hand-crafted singletrack, including the legendary Seven Summits Trail — an IMBA Epic that’s equal parts grind, glory, and grin — Rossland is a mountain biker’s dream. From flowy fun to heart-thumping slabs, there’s no shortage of ways to test your mettle or your brakes. Looking for something more mellow? Cruise the historic Columbia & Western Rail Trail, ride through tunnels, over trestles, and alongside lake views that’ll stop you mid-pedal. Whether you’re chasing airtime, views, or just that post-ride pint in town, Rossland’s got trails for every style and every level.

Gravity, Grit & Great Views
Road Biking & Bikepacking
We might be more famous for our mountain biking here but ask any of the hardcore roadies around Rossland and they’ll tell you what you’re hoping to hear – you just made it to skinny tire heaven, my friend.
Escape the traffic of the big city and find out what those big gears are really for. Whether you prefer our quad-burning, lung-busting climbs or passing sports-cars on technical, switchback-laden downhills, Kootenay climbs always come with a payoff. Our stomping ground is like a more user-friendly Tour de France: Satisfying climbs on winding roads. Tight corners that open up to storybook views. No altitude issues, no attitude issues, either. And the real “yellow jersey,” a steady supply of organic bananas courtesy of the gourmet grocery store in town. So blow that city soot out of your pipes and turn down the traffic.
FAQs
The best time for mountain biking in Rossland, BC is generally from July to September, as this is when the peak season is, and trails are clear of snow. However, you can start riding earlier, with lower-elevation and south-facing trails opening as early as April and the famous Seven Summits trail is best ridden from July to early October. Locals often start riding earlier in the South Kootenay region (a 10 minute drive) as it is lower in elevation with warmer weather sooner.
Depending on when you choose to visit, you can ski and bike in the same day!
When Does the Trail Open?
July to early October is the best time to ride the Seven Summits. Due to its high elevation, it is recommended to check the weather and trail reports before heading out. The trail is remote, with no water available and large sections of no cell phone coverage. Riders are expected to be completely self-sufficient and prepared for quick changes in mountain weather.
How Difficult it the Trail?
Rated as a black diamond trail due to it’s length (spanning 30.4km or 36km when combined with the Dewdney trail) and varying terrain, ensure you are an intermediate to advanced rider – this trail is not suitable for beginners. It’s demanding, with 1,035m of vertical gain and a high point of 2,194m – physical and mental endurance is essential, as is a decent level of cardiovascular fitness. It takes an average Joe six hours or more to complete. Make sure you are prepared with snacks, extra clothing, lots of water, a first aid kit, bike repair kit (a spare inner tube for sure) and bear spray.
Where is the Trailhead?
The Seven Summits Trail is intended to be ridden from north to south and to link with the Dewdney trail. Leave a vehicle at the bottom of the Dewdney trail on Hwy 22, near the US Border in Paterson (12 km South of Rossland) and arrange a shuttle to Highway 3B to the Nancy Green Summit/Strawberry Pass trailhead (or drive an additional car to the top). The trail begins immediately behind the trailhead kiosk at the Pass.
Are E-Bikes Allowed?
Unfortunately e-bikes are not permitted on the Seven Summits Trail as they are banned by local regulations, due to safety concerns, potential for increased erosion, and the risk of inexperienced riders getting injured.
Ride with Remy
Yes, it is strongly recommended that you carry bear spray and know how to use it when biking in the Rossland area. Mountain bikers move quickly and quietly, increasing the chance of surprising a bear (both black and grizzly bears are found in the region), which is the primary cause of defensive bear encounters.
