SUMMARY:Morgan Toney Trio
DESCRIPTION:We promise this is no April Fools joke: JUNO-Nominated Mi’kmaq fiddler and singer Morgan Toney is coming to Rossland\, bringing the fiery fiddling of Cape Breton Island with the old songs of the Mi’kmaq People together with brilliance and heart. \n‘First Flight’\, Toney’s 2023 East Coast Music Award-winning debut album\, celebrates language and heritage in Toney’s transformation of traditional songs like the Ko’jua and the Mi’kmaq Honour Song alongside highly original songcraft. \nThe Mi’kmaw were likely the first people that European explorer John Cabot met in 1497 on the East Coast of what would come to be Atlantic Canada. That legacy of welcome lives on in the songs and fiddling of Cape Breton’s breakout roots artist Morgan Toney. \nWith thousands of years of tradition behind him\, Toney melds the Scottish heritage of this Nova Scotian island with Mi’kmaq songs\, stories\, and language in his own genre of music\, “Mi’kmaltic\,” meaning Mi’kmaq + Celtic. His new album\, ‘Heal the Divide’ (released on March 7th\, 2025 with Indigenous labelIshkōdé Records)\, recognizes the difficult history the L’nuk (Mi’kmaq People) and all First Nations peoples have had in Canada. It also celebrates the L’nu legacy in Canadian culture. It’s part of Toney’s larger vision to bring people together\, to set our differences aside\, and walk toward a place that Tony calls the “Promised Land.” \nMorgan Toney proudly welcomes the rest of Canada and the world to L’nu traditions as they contain many universal teachings.

SUMMARY:Tonye Aganaba
DESCRIPTION:Tonye Aganaba is a Black African queer\, disabled and non-binary immigrant and uninvited settler living on the unceded ancestral territories of the Musqueam\, Squamish & Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. \nThey were born in London\, England – the belly of the beast and the stronghold of imperialism\, colonialism and racial capitalism\, and immigrated to so-called Canada at the age of 13. They proudly trace their ancestral line to the lands known today as Nigeria and Zimbabwe. \nTonye is an interdisciplinary artist and musician – and their style is dynamic and fluid – weaving playful threads of Soul\, Neo-Folk\, Funk\, Hip-Hop and R&B. \nTheir shows\, gatherings\, and workshops are connected and intimate experiences\, and evoke a kind of vulnerability that we all hunger for. They are a steadfast fixture in their local arts community – and a passionate and political being. \nWhen they’re not on stage or in the studio – they’re actively unlearning and re-learning as a community worker and organizer working in solidarity with oppressed peoples and in defense of the planet\, in an effort to decolonize body\, mind\, spirit and space. You can find them organizing with Defund 604 Network\, Community Accountability Project\, Ethos Lab\, and Cops Out Of Schools – four collectives based in so-called Vancouver that are dedicated to creating safe and healthy spaces for all. \nSaturday\, January 24th\, 2025 at 7:15pm\nRossland Miners Hall Lily May Room (upstairs)\n19+\nLength: 2 x 45minute sets with 15 minute intermission in between\nConcession & Bar preshow\, intermission and postshow.
